Ammonia Nitrogen Helium Gas Booster Diaphragm Compressor

Products Details

2 Bar Suction Ammonia, Nitrogen And Helium Gas Booster High Pressure Diaphragm Compressor

A 2 bar suction high pressure diaphragm gas booster is engineered for plants, laboratories, gas filling stations and process skids that receive ammonia, nitrogen or helium at low inlet pressure and require oil-free compression to 50, 100, 200, 350 bar or higher. The metal diaphragm principle isolates the process gas from hydraulic oil, crankcase lubricant and ambient air, so the package is suitable for high-purity helium, inert nitrogen service and corrosive or hazardous ammonia when the wetted materials, seals and safety system are selected for each gas. In a booster layout, a low-pressure pre-booster or buffer stage raises unstable 2 bar supply to the diaphragm inlet setpoint, while the diaphragm compressor performs the final oil-free high-pressure step with multi-stage cooling, valve control and leak monitoring.

Because ammonia, nitrogen and helium have very different chemical, safety and purity profiles, one "universal" machine is not recommended. The correct specification uses separate gas paths or fully re-qualified material sets, validated flow at 2 bar suction, target discharge pressure, cooling method and explosion-protection level.

Helium and ammonia models should be quoted by actual component analysis, not by nitrogen equivalence.

Ammonia Nitrogen Helium Gas Boosters Diaphragm Compressor

Why Diaphragm Booster Instead Of Piston For These Gases

A metal diaphragm compressor closes the process gas in a sealed chamber separated from hydraulic oil by one or more flexible membranes. The crank assembly drives hydraulic fluid; the hydraulic pressure deflects the diaphragm; the diaphragm compresses gas through suction and discharge valves only. This design gives four advantages for 2 bar-to-high-pressure service:

  • Oil-free gas path: no piston lubrication contacts the medium, so output remains free from lubricant aerosol and crankcase contaminants.

  • Near-zero leakage: only valve and clamped diaphragm perimeter need sealing; suited to costly helium, toxic ammonia and flammable mixtures when materials and alarms are specified correctly.

  • Corrosion control: wetted parts can be 316L, Hastelloy, Inconel, titanium or PTFE-lined components depending on ammonia concentration, moisture, nitrogen purity and helium cleanliness.

  • High pressure in stages: diaphragm machines handle single-stage low ratios or multi-stage designs to 100-350 bar and beyond; per-stage pressure ratio can be high when cooling and diaphragm stress are managed.

For 2 bar suction, the booster must confirm stable inlet pressure. If source pressure swings below 1 bar(a) or fluctuates with cylinder banks, add a buffer vessel, pressure regulator or low-pressure pre-booster before the diaphragm head.

Ammonia Considerations

Ammonia is corrosive under moisture and high temperature, flammable within certain mixtures, toxic at elevated concentration and reactive with copper, zinc and some elastomers. A 2 bar ammonia diaphragm booster should be specified as follows:

  • Wetted materials: austenitic stainless 316L for many anhydrous service conditions; Hastelloy or special alloy where moisture, impurities or high stage temperature increase corrosion risk. Avoid copper, brass, zinc coatings and incompatible soft metals.

  • Diaphragm: multilayer stainless or Hastelloy with intermediate leak-detection cavity; hydraulic oil must be isolated so a primary diaphragm failure sends alarm instead of gas/oil cross-contamination.

  • Valves/seats: PTFE, PEEK, graphite or metal-to-metal per pressure and purity; confirm ammonia chemical compatibility for all polymers.

  • Cooling: water jacket preferred for multi-stage; control discharge temperature to reduce decomposition risk and material stress.

  • Safety: relief valves sized for ammonia, gas-leak detectors, ventilation interlock, emergency shutoff, explosion-protected electrical equipment where area classification applies, and neutralization/dilution plan for released ammonia.

  • Purity: anhydrous grades need moisture control; aqueous ammonia needs entirely different metallurgy and separator/drain design. Do not quote one ammonia package for both without component review.

Nitrogen Considerations

Nitrogen is inert and non-flammable, so the main targets are purity, flow efficiency and discharge pressure stability.

  • General industrial nitrogen: 316L wetted parts, PTFE/PEEK valves, air or water cooling, 2 bar suction to 50-200 bar for cylinder filling, pressure testing, accumulator charging and process boost.

  • High-purity nitrogen: electropolished wetted surfaces, metal seals or validated polymer seals, particle and moisture control, ISO 8573-style or customer purity specification, 5N-6N capability where the whole train including tanks, piping and dryers is qualified.

  • Booster duty from 2 bar: a 75 kW reference nitrogen design lists 2 bar inlet and 200 bar outlet with 10-1000 Nm³/h frame range, but actual flow depends on stage count, suction temperature, cooling and diaphragms.

  • Filling/storage: use intermediate buffer tank, aftercooler, filtration and pressure ramp control; avoid direct cylinder bank connection without overload protection.

Helium Considerations

Helium is inert, very low molecular weight and expensive, so the priority is leak tightness, purity and recovery.

  • Leak control: metal diaphragm, welded gas path, metal seals or validated polymer seals, helium leak test before commissioning, intermediate leak cavity on multilayer diaphragms.

  • Purity: for laboratory, cryogenic, leak-test and semiconductor recovery, specify electropolished 316L/Inconel, PTFE/Kalrez/PEEK seals by temperature, and sub-micron filtration. Ultra-high-purity trains may require 5N-6N documentation and ppb-level particle/moisture limits.

  • Recovery boost: 2 bar suction from storage bags, recovery tanks or cryogenic boil-off buffers can be recompressed to cylinder pressure; use VFD control because recovery flow is often variable.

  • Small systems: 2-100 Nm³/h helium diaphragm packages are common for labs; larger recovery skids use multi-stage water cooling.

  • Cost note: helium losses from packing glands, valves and poor purge procedure can exceed energy savings; diaphragm boosters reduce fugitive emission points compared with lubricated reciprocating packs.

Booster System Configuration

A 2 bar suction high pressure package can be arranged in several ways:

Source Condition

Recommended Train

Outcome

Stable 2 bar(g) nitrogen from generator

Direct diaphragm booster, 1-3 stages

Simple, oil-free 50-200 bar filling

Unstable 0.5-2 bar nitrogen/helium

Low-pressure buffer + regulator + diaphragm

Stable suction, longer diaphragm life

2 bar ammonia with moisture/impurities

Filtration, moisture control, corrosion-grade diaphragm, pre-cooling

Safe high-pressure process boost

Cylinder bank decaying from 10-2 bar

Suction buffer + VFD diaphragm

Full useful recovery to target pressure

Mixed plant gases

Separate dedicated boosters; no shared wetted path

Prevents cross-contamination and unsafe material mix

For "gas booster + diaphragm" wording, treat the booster as suction-pressure management and the diaphragm as final oil-free compression. Do not use one piston/diaphragm lubricant path for ammonia and helium together.

Ammonia Nitrogen Helium Gas Booster Diaphragm Compressor

Sizing Method For 2 Bar Suction

  1. Define gas medium exactly: pure nitrogen, pure helium, anhydrous ammonia, aqueous ammonia, or mixed process gas with full component analysis.

  2. State suction pressure and allowable fluctuation: 2 bar(g) steady, or 0.5-2 bar(g) variable. If variable, add buffer/regulator.

  3. State discharge pressure and allowable overshoot; high-pressure filling usually requires staged control and relief.

  4. Convert required flow to Nm³/h at suction conditions; diaphragm selection uses normal volume, not only free volume at discharge.

  5. Select stages: 2 bar to 50 bar may be one or two stages; 2 bar to 200 bar usually two or three stages; 2 bar to 350 bar usually three or more stages with intercooling.

  6. Select cooling: air cooling for small helium/lab units; water jacket/intercooler for nitrogen 100+ bar and all ammonia multi-stage.

  7. Select materials by gas: 316L for clean nitrogen/helium; Inconel/electropolish for UHP helium; Hastelloy/special alloy for aggressive ammonia.

  8. Add safety system: relief valves, burst disks where specified, pressure/temperature switches, leak detection for ammonia/helium, gas detection and ventilation for ammonia, explosion-protected controls for flammable mixtures.

  9. Confirm power supply, motor enclosure, VFD requirement, PLC I/O, remote monitoring and local codes.

  10. Request factory performance test at 2 bar suction, target discharge, specified gas, cooling water/air condition and purity acceptance.

Safety And Compliance Features

  • Overpressure protection: relief valve on each high-pressure stage or manifold, plus burst disk where design requires.

  • Over-temperature protection: discharge temperature switch, intercooler monitoring, automatic unload on ammonia to prevent thermal decomposition.

  • Leak detection: diaphragm leak cavity alarm; helium systems use helium sniffer or mass-spectrometer qualification; ammonia systems use NH3 sensors and ventilation interlock.

  • Electrical protection: Ex d IIC T4 or appropriate ATEX/IECEx rating for flammable/ammonia-classified areas; non-spark ventilation controls for general ammonia rooms.

  • Hydraulic safety: separate hydraulic circuit with filter, pressure limit and diaphragm-failure isolation; metal diaphragm prevents gas/oil mixing.

  • Quality standards: request ISO 9001 manufacturer system, pressure-equipment compliance per destination, ASME/CE/PED as required, material certificates, weld procedure and hydrostatic/pneumatic test reports.

  • Operational control: PLC with suction/discharge pressure, stage temperature, flow, motor load, VFD speed, alarm history and remote stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one 2 bar diaphragm booster handle ammonia, nitrogen and helium together?

Not with one shared gas path. Nitrogen and helium can share a general inert frame only if purity and material requirements match; ammonia requires separate corrosion-rated materials, safety classification and usually dedicated service. For multi-gas facilities, specify separate boosters or a fully re-qualified changeover procedure with cleaning, purging and material verification.

Is 2 bar enough suction pressure for 200 bar nitrogen?

Yes, if the diaphragm machine is designed for low suction. Reference nitrogen boosters include 2 bar inlet and 200 bar outlet in 7.5-90 kW frames, but actual Nm³/h depends on stage count, cooling and suction temperature. For unstable supply below 2 bar, add a buffer tank or low-pressure pre-booster.

What diaphragm material is best for ammonia at 2 bar suction?

Anhydrous ammonia often uses 316L in lower stages and Hastelloy or Inconel in higher stages, but final selection depends on moisture, impurities, discharge pressure and temperature. Copper, brass and zinc coatings should be avoided. Always request corrosion compatibility confirmation and leak-cavity diaphragm construction.

Why use diaphragm instead of piston for helium?

Piston boosters can lubricate contacting surfaces and create more sealing points; helium is costly and leaks easily. A metal diaphragm unit isolates gas from oil, reduces dynamic seals and supports welded/electropolished high-purity paths, which is preferred for recovery, laboratory and cryogenic fill applications.

How many stages from 2 bar to 350 bar?

Usually three or more with intercooling, depending on permitted stage ratio, gas temperature and diaphragm stress. Some diaphragm designs allow high single-stage ratio under near-isothermal control, but 350 bar filling normally benefits from multi-stage water cooling and staged relief.

Do ammonia boosters need explosion-proof motors?

If the area is classified for flammable ammonia mixtures or the process includes flammable impurities, use explosion-protected motors and controls per local code; otherwise still install ammonia gas detection, ventilation and emergency isolation. Pure anhydrous ammonia classification depends on concentration, ventilation and code, so the hazard study decides the exact Ex rating.

What flow can a 2 bar suction diaphragm booster deliver?

Small lab helium frames may be 2-100 Nm³/h; nitrogen industrial frames commonly 10-1000 Nm³/h at 2 bar suction; large multi-cylinder diaphragm systems can exceed 1000 Nm³/h. Ammonia flow is set by corrosion duty, stage temperature and safety limits rather than by nitrogen equivalents.

What should be requested from suppliers for quotation?

Gas exact composition, suction pressure range including 2 bar(g), suction temperature, target discharge pressure, Nm³/h flow, allowable pressure fluctuation, cooling air/water data, purity specification, material requirement, safety standard/Ex zone, relief and leak-detection requirement, voltage/frequency, control system, test gas, documentation and commissioning scope.

A 2 bar suction high pressure diaphragm gas booster should be specified separately for ammonia, nitrogen and helium: oil-free metal diaphragm compression, corrosion-rated materials and leak-cavity safety for ammonia, electropolished UHP materials and metal/PTFE sealing for helium, and standard 316L or high-purity stainless with staged cooling for nitrogen. With correct suction buffering, multi-stage intercooling and PLC safety control, the package provides stable 50-350 bar oil-free output for filling, recovery, process boost and laboratory service without contaminating the gas stream.
